In a surprising twist of events, StackOverflow and OpenAI join forces to redefine how AI companies use human work

StackOverflow is the biggest knowledge base for programmers in the world. Over years it gathered answers to answers in almost any programming language.

Lately however, it is struggling. While some people think it’s because ChatGPT, the truth is it seen a decline before, and LLMs just made it worse.

Nine months ago StackOverflow announced OverflowAI, it’s own AI supporting the needs of developers and more.

More, because we have to remember that Stack Exchange, the brand, consists of many Q&A services, not only for programmers.

The reactions to these events were mixed. Some of you noticed it may be good, because StackOverflow may find a way to appreciate people who contributed heavily to the knowledge base.

Especially because otherwise, AI will destroy the Internet. No one will contribute anymore if bigtech will steal their work.

In the hopes of seeing how StackOverflow tackles these existential problems that may cause it’s decline, I’ve read the announcement made just now by StackOverflow.

The announcement is quite surprising. Because it occurs StackOverflow decided to partner with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

If you can defeat it, join it, they say. Long story short the cooperation is described as mutual. OpenAI will boost ChatGPT with StackOverflow questions and answers, while StackOverflow will be able to use OpenAI APIs for OverflowAI.

Before we start to rant why it’s the worst scenario possible, let’s dive deeper into the announcement:

Our goal with OverflowAPI, and our work to advance the era of socially responsible AI, is to set new standards with vetted, trusted, and accurate data that will be the foundation on which technology solutions are built and delivered to our user.

The first two phrases caught my eye. Social responsibility and new standards for me is a solution where several trillion dollar AI industry pays authors for their contributions and attributes…
