Writing smart clock apps will become easier with new CSS features

W3C is working continuously on standardizing Cascade Style Sheets. At the end of the year a new Snapshot will be created containing all standards developed during this year.

The road to becoming a CSS standard is long. It starts with an Editor Draft, moving to Working Draft, through LCWD, and PR to REC. Some standards become official part of CSS, some are dropped.

Today, we will look inside the work of the W3C team and see what they are up to. Just a word of notice, most of these specifications are in WD state, meaning they may, or may not become a standard in the future. Most of them are in the state of “Exploring”. Today I will tell you about how W3C is working on making writing smart clock apps easier with a new standard that is in the Working Draft status:

CSS Round Display Level 1

Smart clocks sometimes come with an old-school round display. It causes however some trouble with styling. Specifically, you can have a hard time recognizing if the screen is a rectangle, or a circle. Then, your design may break, as show on this illustration from the draft:

The specification edited by Hyojin Song, Jihye Hong and SoonBo Han offers a new way to apply CSS styles depending on the shape of the screen:
