Some people use yarn instead of npm, so it is also worth checking out. Visual Studio Code is the best IDE currently. It makes navigating through code extremely easy. Also has tons of extensions for everything including an extension called Hinty.

But really if you want you can code in every text editor, so it is not a big deal if you can't run the fancy ones.
