In such years as 2024 it’s worth to join crazy new ideas because some of them will grow a horn!

The tech layoffs are sweeping throught all the industries in the last years. It’s something hard to accommodate.

The new reality is that companies layoff tens or hundreds of people while reporting top revenue at the same time. For example Microsoft reported 17% increase of revenue in the first quarter of 2024, while reportedly laying off 1900 Activision Blizzard and Xbox employees in January 2024.

The latest news that made it to the headlines is Google laying off its entire Python core team of around 200 people including 50 engineering positions.

Some, unconfirmed sources also say Flutter and Dart team members were laid off. But I can’t find good source for this information. That’s to be honest unlikely, because both are Google products.

But laying off core team of Python developers also seems unlikely because Python is the goto language for the current wave of weak AI products, and layoffs rarely affect coders.

Google doesn’t want to miss on AI trend and in fact, according to the information, supposedly offers employees positions in other departments.

If it comes to the roles, some should be filled in other countries than US, officially closer to the customers, but coincidentally also saving some bucks.

Google was funded in 1998, two years before recession and just three years before dot com bubble burst

But it’s not like Google offshores all of it’s operations. Of 2426 job offers available right now, 951 are based in the US. For a global company, almost half of jobs in one country is a lot. And it defies the narrative that Google is moving all roles…
