How to buy a second-hand laptop

Contrary to a popular belief, I am a programmer, and don’t buy all the new fancy stuff. I especially don’t buy new laptops or computers. For two main reasons:

  • I don’t like to waste money
  • It is not sustainable

So what I like to do is to keep my costs at low, and buy only hardware I need. But since I need to have a proper amount of computing power due to growing demands of programming tools, it is a challenge.

But a nice one. Because instead of spending $4k on a shiny new Apple laptop, I can buy stuff with the money, or save it for later.

A great way to buy a used laptop is to look for refurbished units, used ones — directly from previous users, or from pawn shops.

That way you produce less garbage due to the re-use, and save money. I am able to buy a laptop that perfectly fits my needs for $200. You see it right — $200. I save $3800 compared to latest Apple laptop.

Such laptop is good for 2–3 years, and than can be sold and still be used successfully for several years.
