GitHub CEO: Coding’s Dead, Long Live Task-Writing

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke says the future of software development is writing precise tasks for AI agents — not writing code. On a recent podcast, he shared how devs may soon orchestrate autonomous agents instead of debugging functions.

“MAD Podcast with Matt Turck” that was published two weeks ago. Thomas says a lot about coding agents that can work independently and without human intervention on tasks. As an example, he brings up an example where he didn’t have time updating Readme file, and asked AI agent to update the readme based on the codebase. He didn’t say however if the result was good, or if we had to fix the result.

It seems that Thomas is really excited about having multiple AI agents working in paralel on different tasks on the same codebase. But he also notices that for this to happen AI agents have to be capable to actually do tasks from start to the end without human support. Because, as he states, if you need to correct AI, and wait another ten minutes, it breaks your flow.
