😵 DevOps Shocked. AWS Kills Its Own GitHub Competitor — CodeCommit

Apparently AWS doesn’t need repositories anymore. You can stay, but there are migration instructions and no deadline. Everything is fine 🫨

Usually if it comes to killing services we automatically think about Google. But this time it’s Amazon Web Services pulling the plug.

As Jeff Barr, AWS Chief Evangelist mentioned in his tweet, CodeCommit and some other services pack their bags:

After giving it a lot of thought, we made the decision to discontinue new access to a small number of services, including AWS CodeCommit.

While we are no longer onboarding new customers to these services, there are no plans to change the features or experience you get today, including keeping them secure and reliable.

We also support migrations to other AWS or third-party solutions better aligned with your evolving needs. Keep the feedback coming. We’re always listening.

Translating from corporate to English:

We will phase out some services
Thank you. Good night

Good news is that the existing customers will be able to use them. But it’s uncertain for how long.

But we eventually learned what services are affected:

The services I'm referring to are: S3 Select, CloudSearch, Cloud9, SimpleDB, Forecast, Data Pipeline, and CodeCommit.

It’s quite a shocking news. Especially about S3 Select and CodeCommit.

The latter one is a AWS clone of GitHub. Great choice for minimalists.

I don’t understand why AWS is doing it silently. I mean — not everyone is committing to follow Taylor Swift and Jeff Barr on social media platform where this news appears especially since it’s not Mastodon.

For the people who already use these services or were planning to use them broadly it is a rather important information.

CodeCommit with its repos is part of a lot of production systems.

Unfortunately it doesn’t mean AWS is making a place for something better. No. In fact it seems that they won’t offer repos anymore.
