Facebook / Meta just launched a Twitter competitor called Threads. From this article you’ll learn everything you’d like to know about it.

To log in to Threads you have to have an Instagram account, and live in the US or UK. The first requirement is kinda obvious because Meta made an account umbrella and is using it for this new service. The second requirement is a business decision / geo-discrimination based on what you’d like to believe. It may also be a sign of an unprofessional start of the service from the global giant. It’s not the only sign they hurried. But we will get back to it later.

Social Media Landscape 2023

Let’s see what is the landscape of the social media services right now. It’s my personal reception of them, so it may not reflect in actual user base, but Facebook, Instagram, Twitter became kinda lame lately (Twitter was always btw.). Twitter was taken out of the stock market with last year’s reports that even 80% of its users looking in fact like bots.

API and scraping of the site had been limited lately too, reportedly because of AI companies that heat up Twitter servers. Companies that may be building AI models, just like OpenAI does.

IRL was shut down after reports stating that 95% of its users might be bots.

Reddit faces a backlash from admins that are not happy with the API limitations.

LinkedIn's groups don’t attract these groups, because of a lot of issues, one is that some groups are locked out due to missing admins.

Mastodon on the other hand with the initial spike after Twitter trouble boosts its competitiveness, and is the only decentralized social media platform that may replace corporate junk.

What is the Threads app

At this moment, in the middle of summer, Meta launches Threads counting on gaining users dissatisfied with other social media services.
